Saturday 26 October International Rally of the Valais

Since 1960, rallying has been in the DNA of the Valais. Over the years, the Rallye du Vin has become the Rallye International du Valais. Since the late 1970s, the event has been part of the European calendar, including the prestigious European Rally Championship.

The first edition of this event took place in September 1960 under the name "Rallye du Vin". It was part of the 1st Comptoir de Martigny, which has since become the Foire du Valais. As fast as the Octodurian event, the Rallye du Vin quickly grew in size, while remaining true to its name and philosophy: the discovery of the different regions of the canton of Valais, its vineyards and its wines.

From 1976 onwards, the tourist aspect of the event gave way to purely sporting motor racing, and the event soon gained international recognition, including the famous European Rally Championship, which has been held in the Valais every autumn since 1979. With this added visibility, the Rallye du Vin attracted many renowned international drivers, including Jimmy McRae, Per Eklund and Jean Ragnotti. Sweden's Eklund claimed the first foreign victory in 1980. The following year, Jimmy McRae, father of a certain Colin, triumphed on the Valais roads in an Opel Ascona 400.

In the 80s, Harald Demuth (DEU), Robert Droogmans (BEL), Patrick Snijers (BEL) and more recently Lucas Rossetti (ITA), Freddy Loix (BEL), Nicolas Vouilloz (FRA), Giandomenico Basso (ITA) and Esapekka Lappi (FIN), who went on to win the World Rally Championship. Today, the Rallye International du Valais is still one of the most prestigious rounds on the calendar, with its renowned courses.

In 2022, a new 100% volunteer committee took over the organization of the event, with the aim of restoring the rally to its former glory. The Rallye International du Valais remains a myth, with the passes that have made its history, such as the so-called Cols pass, on the territory of the Val de Bagnes commune (Col des Planches, Col du Tronc, Col du Lein).

Sunday 3 November Alpine cheese market

In the old village of Bruson in the heart of the Val de Bagnes, come and buy a few pieces or wheels of Raclettes du Valais PDO brought back from the mountain pastures of the Vals Ferret, Bagnes or Entremont.

In the valleys of Bagnes, Entremont and Ferret, eight alpine pastures produce the famous Valais Raclette AOP from the milk of cows that graze exclusively on the flowery grasslands of our high pastures.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to find them all on a lovely street in the village of Bruson at the market, where you can buy whole or half cheese loaves. Share a drink, a platter, or a raclette, where you melt your own cheese over potatoes, while you chat to the men and women who have spent several weeks in the mountains to give us these exceptional cheeses today.

Wednesday 6 november Frosted Workshop

The Givré collective invites you to make an upcycled utilitarian object using dormant materials from old exhibitions.

Throughout the year, the Givré collective is inviting you to take part in the "Faire (avec)" exhibition and make an upcycled utilitarian object out of dormant materials from old exhibitions. Do you have a vintage ski suit, paraglider canvas, bicycle inner tube, haberdashery items or fabric lying dormant in your cupboards? Come and give them a second chance and swap one of these (soft) materials for an upcycled object. Freed from a consumerist logic, these workshops are an opportunity to think about a future built on the values of exchange, co-creation and sustainability.

Saturday 9 November Museum Night

After a year of exploration through the exhibition Faire (avec), what will be left of these experiences, practices and knowledge for 2080? The Musée de Bagnes invites you to think together about the world of the future.

Sunday 10 November RANA BEGUM : Verbier 3-D Foundation Sculpture Park

The Verbier 3-D Foundation presents new work by London-based artist Rana Begum, who was invited for a research-led residency to immerse herself in the local alpine community and explore the environmental theme of ENERGY.

Inspired by materials, technologies and ecological know-how of the surrounding natural landscape, Begum’s new work encourages spectators to contemplate their relationship with the natural environment and the all-encompassing reality of the change that defines it.

In two separate locations, visitors are invited to discover Begum’s work in residence and research in the environment that has inspired them, which promotes an immediate exchange between art and the landscape. In the sculpture park of Verbier’s Fondation 3-D, visitors will discover Rana Begum’s new sculpture, ‘No.1387 Fence’. The second location is a 5 km walk between the ski lift stations Croix-de-Coeur and Les Ruinettes. This exhibition presents panels and cabins that give an overview of the artist’s creative process that inspired the piece in the sculpture park. This visual journey presents personal photographs shot by the artist during her residence, intertwined with new colour studies that explore the energy, geometry and materiality that she encountered in Verbier and the surrounding valley.

During her residence, Rana Begum was moved by the way in which the austere landscape transforms according to the seasons and changes in the weather. The location is exposed to extreme conditions that reveal the essential flow of nature, the mountains vanishing when the fog descends or changing colour when the snow falls or melts. The sudden presence of the sculpture, its interaction with the public and its ultimate absence reflect the temporality of its environment, appearing and disappearing without leaving a lasting impact.

The power of this landscape invites us to become aware of our place within it, which led Begum and her collaborator Steve Webb to use ephemeral materials that absorb their dramatic backdrop instead of competing with it, emphasising its inherent change. The interplay of shadow and light on the fencing panels creates changing layers of colour that transform as the spectator finds their way through the sculpture, creating moments of density.
